Standing tall for young people
Indigo Junction is transforming its Youth Service to accommodate the rising need for youth crisis support in the City of Swan.
Yaakiny is a purpose-built Youth Crisis and Transitional Accommodation service currently under construction in Midland. When complete, the project will provide 36 safe and supported accommodation units for young people experiencing homelessness or housing crisis, alongside flexible, wrap-around support to help them build a more secure future.
The project will deliver Western Australia’s first Housing First for Youth (HF4Y) model, recognising that young people need a safe and stable place to call home before they can begin to address the other challenges in their lives.
The name Yaakiny, meaning stand tall in Noongar, was chosen by Indigo Junction’s Cultural Committee and reflects our vision for young people to have the safety, stability and support they need to thrive.
Following careful planning, community consultation and co-design, Yaakiny has now moved from concept to construction, with the project on track for completion in late 2026.
A safe place to start again
Housing is just the beginning.
For a young person experiencing homelessness, having somewhere safe to sleep can be the first step towards a different future.
Yaakiny will provide young people with secure accommodation alongside individualised support that responds to their goals, strengths and circumstances. Young people will be supported to build independence, reconnect with education and employment, strengthen relationships and develop the skills and confidence needed for long-term housing stability.
Rather than requiring young people to overcome barriers before accessing housing, the Housing First for Youth model starts with a simple principle: young people deserve a safe and stable home, without conditions.
Yaakiny will create an environment where young people can feel safe, respected and supported while they take the next steps towards independence.
Meeting a growing need
More young people are reaching out for help.
Indigo Junction receives around 600 calls each year from young people seeking support, many of whom have nowhere safe to go.
Yaakiny will significantly expand Indigo Junction’s youth accommodation capacity, creating more opportunities to intervene early and support young people before homelessness becomes entrenched.
For more than 46 years, Indigo Junction has supported people and families experiencing homelessness, housing crisis and hardship across the City of Swan. Yaakiny builds on this experience while introducing a new model designed specifically around the needs of young people.

Government Partners
Indigo Junction secured $5.67 million from the Western Australian Government’s Social Housing Economic Recovery Package (SHERP) towards construction and an additional $5 million from Lotterywest to support the refurbishment of our existing youth house, landscaping across the completed site, and the purchase of furniture and fittings for Yaakiny.
